The first Annual “Hop Around the Block” was a huge success as 250 children and their parents wound around three blocks to enjoy a morning of Easter treats and funs.
“This is an amazing town and our children will never forget the day they paraded in Mancelona with the Easter Bunny and got Easter eggs from the owners of the businesses in town,” said organizer Sandy Bockhurst.
Sandy and her husband Felix have been tireless in promoting Mancelona since starting Sandy’s Candy and Ice Cream. In October, they formed a grassroots group called “Mancelona Matters” which has grown to over 130 volunteers. The group is coordinating many community activities to strengthen families and community ties.
“No other group of volunteers is as willing to make a difference to a town that has a broken heart,” said Sandy, choking up.
Despite a chill in the April air, goodwill was all around as Easter Bunny Jamie Horn hopped around visiting children, posing for pictures, and passing out treats. In addition, the children walked through downtown and visited downtown businesses for more candy.
“I am so proud of our town, the Mancelona Matters group, and all the families who came out!” exclaimed Ellen Schettling Whitehead.
“A huge thank you to Sandra Kay Bockhorst and her awesome hubby Felix!” added Beckie Brodd-Cook. “You are truly bringing a sign of hope for our little town! You two are truly two of God’s Earthly Angels!”
Thank you to the Easter bunny and everyone else that helped,” said resident Stephanie Schmitz. “Great time, great people. Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU!”
