Mancelona Matters. Despite the setbacks in recent years, the people of this northern Michigan town continue to have hope, and they watch out for each other. The town reminds one a bit of Mayberry.

Sandra Kay Bockhorst has brought energy into the downtown area which has spread throughout the town. As owner of downtown Mancelona Sandy’s Candy and Ice Cream Store, she recruited several other community members to form a group called “Mancelona Matters.”

Several recent community events sponsored by Mancelona Matters have shown the town’s spirit. Mancelona Days was held in the fall and combined with the Miss Mancelona Contest. This contest was revived so that Mancelona is once more represented and has a float in the area parades.

In addition, the first annual “Light Up Mancelona” in December was a big success, and featured a visit from Santa Claus as well as a Christmas tree auction.

February 7 White Pine Stampede
